Joann Sweasy
Director of the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Director of the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Nebraska (USA)
Dr. Sweasy is the Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Director of the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Sweasy holds the Robert F and Myrna L. Krohn Chair in Cancer Research. She was previously the Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center. She also served as a Member of NCI-subcommittee A, which is the panel that reviews all NCI -designated Cancer Centers and a Member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Cancer Institutes. Sweasy is currently the Vice President/President-elect of the American Association of Cancer Institutes. As the Director of the University of Arizona Cancer Center, Dr. Sweasy led the Center to renewal of its NCI Comprehensive designation in 2022. To do this she developed and implemented the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan; established the Office of Cancer Research Training and Education; expanded Community Outreach and Engagement; and launched the Arizona Clinical Trials Network. Previously, Dr. Sweasy served as Associate Director for Basic Sciences at the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this capacity, she had oversight of strategic planning for basic sciences in the ~300-member Cancer Center, and directed the pilot and limited opportunity funding program. Sweasy also served as Vice-Chair of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology at Yale University School of Medicine, where she was responsible for development and expansion of basic research. Dr. Sweasy is an internationally recognized expert in DNA repair and has been continuously funded by the NIH since the start of her independent career for her research on the genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry of DNA repair and the roles of aberrant DNA repair in cancer and autoimmunity.
