Mission: Cultivating Professionals with Knowledge and Humanity

Our daily work is dedicated to a one word of gratitude and a smile of contentment from our patients and their family members. In order to win the trust of people we serve, we affirm that:
- We will do our utmost to gain advanced knowledge and skills in medicine.
- We will cultivate empathy for the suffering and sorrow that accompany disease, and will always maintain a strong sense of ethics.
- We will support all those who are engaged in education, research and medical service as they continue their journey to become true professionals with knowledge and humanity.
The above is the mission of TMDU, which we declare with humility and strive to achieve.

TMDU's Educational Philosophies
Based on our mission to “cultivate professionals with knowledge and humanity”, we defined three educational philosophies, which explain what kind of personnel TMDU is aiming to develop.

To provide students with a wide-ranging education and rich sensibility.
First is “to provide students with a wide-ranging education and rich sensibility.” The first thing students enroling the university to become medical professionals is education. It is not about teaching medical knowledge and skills. It is about developing a sense of moral value and empathy. This philosophy is the foundation of TMDU, the only state university that provides comprehensive liberal arts education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

To educate creative people capable of diagnosing and solving problems independently.
The second philosophy is “to educate creative people capable of diagnosing and solving problems independently.” Acquiring knowledge and skills passively will just make that person capable of solving given problems only. People get sick for a variety of social and individual reasons. It is these different human beings that medical professionals are going to face. They have to be creative in finding and addressing a problem, and come up with a solution by themselves, or they cannot heal anyone. TMDU has a rich curriculum to nurture creative people with advanced medical knowledge and excellent skills.

To train medical professionals with a rich international quality.
The third philosophy is “to train medical professionals with a rich international quality.” In addition to advanced knowledge and skills, medical professionals must be humane with deep understanding on their country’s spiritual culture as well as openness to other cultures, in order to understand each other. A person with good cross-cultural communication skills. A person who can develop medical professionals in other countries. They are the “medical professionals who have a rich international quality” we wish to train. Clinical training programs in overseas universities and the credit transfer programs with those universities are based on this philosophy.
Based on these three educational philosophies, Tokyo Medical and Dental University will cultivate professionals with knowledge and humanity.

Brand Goal: Coordinate between medical and dental practices to become the global standard in healthcare and medical/dental research. In the area of medicine, there will be a stronger demand for coordination between medical and dental practices. As we further enhance our original system of education, research and healthcare, Tokyo Medical and Dental University will become the global model in training medical professionals around the world. We will continue to plant seeds toward that goal.
